Everybody is talking about Spotify and the pros and cons of “free music.” Now the AFTM and KOOP-FM plan to help by sponsoring a screening of the new documentary The Shopkeeper.

Musician and first-time filmmaker Rain Perry confronts a big issue by telling a small story - of the longest continuously operating recording studio in Austin, TX and the shopkeeper who runs it, Mark Hallman.

After recording Carole King, Ani DiFranco and many great Austin artists, Mark is struggling to keep the studio open in the era of streaming. Funny, sweet and insightful, with great music and interviews with Ani DiFranco, Iain Matthews, Eliza Gilkyson and more, The Shopkeeper captures the frustration and resolute spirit of musicians today, inspiring the audience to create real solutions for musicians and music fans.

Director Rain Perry’s song “Beautiful Tree” was the theme for the CW Network’s Life Unexpected, on which she also had the surreal pleasure of appearing as herself. She has released four albums on her own Precipitous Records, as well as writing and touring a solo play about her childhood called Cinderblock Bookshelves: A Guide For Children of Fame-Obsessed Bohemian Nomads. The Shopkeeper is her first film.
