NEW AFTM MONTHLY EVENT

every 4th Saturday of the month.

Join us for our open-mic gathering at

Ruta Maya Coffee House & Organic Coffee Importing
3601 South Congress Avenue, Suite D-200, Austin,
512-707-9637
http://rutamaya.net/

TIME: 3 - 6 pm.

Room to jam outside. We're talking old-time, folk, bluegrass, country blues, mountain music, world music, etc. We'll even take new songs done in a traditional style, but let's keep it acoustic. If you happened to be in Austin in the early-1970s when the AFTM got started, you might remember our bi-monthly meetings at various venues around town. We have not done the open-mic format since the Armadillo World Headquarters beer garden days. If interested in playing, sign up at 3 pm and we'll get started around 3:30 pm. We need audience as well as musicians, so tell your friends and neighbors to come on out and support live traditional music in Austin!

Here are a few simple rules and info about the event:

  1. Performances must be acoustic traditional folk music.
  2. Performers must sign up to play.
  3. A sound system and sound engineer will be available.
  4. Performances will be no longer than 15 minutes, once mics are set up.
  5. Periodically AFTM will pass the tip jar to cover the costs of the sound system and engineer.
  6. Any money collected in excess of the sound system & engineer expense will go to AFTM to help defray expenses of our various programs.

Tony McManus album cover

November 12th

Celtic guitar legend Tony McManus

will be playing at Fiddler's Green
Thursday November 12th at 7pm.

Tickets are $15

Gilmer and Moore (local celtic duo) will be the opening act.

"If his playing betrays an almost classical discipline on occasions, it is always informed by the tradition. Whether he is playing Irish or Scottish music, his virtuosity effectively masks the fact that his instrument is native to neither.....surely the sign of a master musician. This combination of musical competence and respect for the tradition doesn't just make for pleasant listening but assures this album a wider audience than just the followers of folk."

Seán Ó hÉalaí, presenter / producer 'An Chaint sa gCathair', Raidió na Gaeltachta RTE Dublin.

Tony McManus (born 1965, Paisley) is a Scottish acoustic Celtic folk guitarist of Irish descent.[1][2] He is highly regarded for his exceptional skill and expressive playing. English guitarist John Renbourn described McManus as "the best Celtic guitarist in the world". His first self-titled album was released in 1996 on Greentrax Recordings. His second album, entitled Pourquoi Quebec?, was recorded in Quebec, Canada and released on the same label in January 1998. His third album, "Ceol More", was released in 2002 and achieved widespread critical acclaim. Ceol More exhibits not only McManus's proficiency as a guitarist, but also as an arranger, including a version of Charles Mingus's Goodbye Porkpie Hat. He has recorded duets with noted Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser, as well as recently releasing an album with French bassist Alain Genty, entitled Singing Sands,[1][2] and is currently on tour supporting Andy Mckee.

San Francisco's all-gal old-time teardown, THE STAIRWELL SISTERS, play a deep and rowdy repertoire of timeless tunes plus a solid standing of smart, original material that is winning praise on a national level. The Stairwell Sisters lay down concerts and square dances for counter-culturalists everywhere, infusing the old music with intoxicating energy and soul. The stairwell has never sounded better.

Producer Lloyd Maines recalls his first encounter with the band: "I happened upon this tribe of women musicians, playing old-time string music, with the power and excitement of a great rock band."
